Who private tuition suits

Tuition is not remedial by default. It is used just as often by students who are already doing well and want to move from a B to an A, or from an A to an A*, as by students who have fallen behind.

The situations that come up most often:

  • A single subject is dragging the rest down. Everything else is fine and one grade is standing between a student and an offer. This is the clearest case for tuition and usually the quickest to fix.
  • A specific gap rather than a whole subject. Mechanics in Maths, organic chemistry, essay structure in History. The teaching starts at the gap rather than the beginning of the course.
  • A retake alongside other commitments. Students working, on a gap year, or retaking one subject while starting a degree foundation year, where a full timetable is not practical.
  • Preparation for something the school does not cover.Admissions tests, interviews, or a subject the school does not offer.

Subjects and levels

Tuition is available in all A-level and GCSE subjects, and at university level across a wide range of subjects, including undergraduate coursework and exam preparation.

Where a subject has a practical or coursework component, tuition can cover the written papers and the preparation for the practical work, but the assessed practical element itself has to be completed through a registered centre. If you are a private candidate this is worth sorting out early; our guide toretaking A-levels privately explains how centre registration works.

Oxbridge and Medicine preparation

Preparation for Oxbridge and for Medicine is a different exercise from subject tuition. The grades are necessary but they are not what separates applicants, because most people in the pile have them.

That preparation covers the admissions tests, the personal statement, and above all the interview: being asked a question you have not met before and thinking aloud, in front of someone, without falling apart. It is a skill that responds to practice and almost nobody gets to practise it at school.

Medicine applicants retaking A-levels have an additional problem, which is that a minority of medical schools will not consider retake applicants at all and others apply higher grade requirements. Which is which changes year to year. Our guide onretakes for medicine and Oxbridge covers the current picture and where to check.

Online or in person

Both work. In person suits younger students, anyone who finds it hard to concentrate at home, and subjects where the tutor needs to watch a student work through a problem on paper.

Online removes travel time entirely, which in practice means more sessions actually happen, and it widens the choice of tutor beyond who is within reach of your postcode. For a specialist subject that matters more than it sounds. Sessions use video with a shared whiteboard, so working is visible to both sides rather than described.

Students in a retake year often use both: in person for the subject that needs the most attention, online for everything else.

How tutors are chosen

Tutors are specialists in their own subject, selected for subject expertise and for the ability to teach it, which are not the same thing. Knowing a subject well is the entry requirement, not the qualification.

Matching matters as much as credentials. A tutor who suits a confident student who wants to be pushed hard is not always the right one for a student who has lost confidence after a bad set of results. Tell us which you are dealing with when you enquire, because it changes who we suggest.

How much tuition you actually need

Less than most people expect, if it is aimed properly. An hour a week per subject, used on the specific things that are going wrong and backed by independent work in between, moves grades. Three hours a week of general revision company usually does not.

A useful starting point is one session a week per subject for a term, then a review of whether it is working. Intensity is worth increasing in the run up to exams and in the weeks after mock results, when you know exactly what needs attention. Ourten week revision plan sets out how tuition fits alongside independent study.
